Today's job at a glance
Today we were in a modern two-storey Brisbane townhouse fitted with dark charcoal carpet through the staircase and upstairs bedrooms. Dark carpet is popular because it hides marks between cleans, but it still collects the same dry soil, dust and body oils as any other carpet, and on stairs the wear concentrates on the front edge of every tread. The brief was simple: bring the whole upper level back to a fresh, even finish, with the stairs given the same care as the open rooms.
Working the stairs step by step
Stairs cannot be rushed. Each tread and riser was vacuumed, pre-sprayed and then cleaned individually with a hand wand so the nose of every step, where shoes and socks land hardest, got proper agitation and extraction. Working from the top of the staircase down means nothing is walked back over while it is damp, and the wand strokes you can see in today's photos are the pile sitting up clean and uniform after extraction. The white skirting and risers were kept dry and streak-free throughout.
In the bedrooms the process was the same on a larger scale: a thorough dry vacuum first, pre-treatment across the walkways, then hot water extraction in overlapping passes. The charcoal pile finished plush and consistent from wall to wall, with the corners and door lines detailed by hand.
Drying and the next step
With doors open and air moving through the upper level, this carpet was on track to be dry within a few hours. We always recommend keeping heavy traffic off the stairs until they are fully dry, both for safety and to protect the result.
